EXPO 2025 OSAKA: MINISTRY OF DIGITAL REDEFINES DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION, STRENGTHENING GLOBAL PARTNERSHIPS

OSAKA, 22 AUGUST 2025 – After five days of showcasing the nation’s digitalisation agenda on the international stage, the Ministry of Digital Week in conjunction with Expo 2025 Osaka concluded on 15 August, following a vibrant presence at the Malaysia Pavilion since 11 August.

With the theme “Weaving a Future in Harmony”, the Ministry of Digital Week, spearheaded by the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC), was virtually officiated by YB Gobind Singh Deo, Minister of Digital, on 11 August 2025, with the opening address delivered by YB Tuan Syed Ibrahim Syed Noh, Chairman of MDEC. The opening ceremony also witnessed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Unbound and the Faculty of Economics and Management, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM). This event served as a key platform for Malaysia to showcase the nation’s capabilities and potential in the digital creative sector, encompassing animation, digital games, immersive technology, and the development of original content based on local intellectual property (IP).

Throughout the week, local digital creative companies participated in exhibition sessions and a variety of interactive activities designed to highlight their unique innovative and immersive creations. The local digital gaming industry also drew significant attention and enthusiastic response from visitors, who had the opportunity to experience Malaysian-made digital game products such as Upin & Ipin Universe by Les' Copaque, GigaBash by Passion Republic Games, and No Straight Roads by Metronomik.

The Business Matching session, successfully held on 12 August 2025 in collaboration with the Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE), brought together 14 local companies with international industry partners to promote local IPs to global buyers and collaborators. This session served as a vital platform to expand business and investment networks between Malaysia, Japan, and various other countries, with potential investments estimated to reach RM134 million.

In the effort to strengthen the digital creative industry and showcase local expertise on the global stage, a series of Business Pocket Talks and Fireside Chats were held on 13 August 2025, featuring prominent voices including representatives from MDEC, Metronomik, OMG Studios, Kezerk, and many others. The event provided a platform for discussions on key topics such as investment opportunities in Malaysia, the creation of culturally inspired content, education transformation through technology, content innovation with Generative AI and virtual production, as well as strategies for developing Southeast Asia’s digital game studios. Among other public activities that drew visitors to the Malaysia Pavilion were appearances by popular animated characters Upin & Ipin, Boboiboy and Ejen Ali, screenings of local animation series, and special colouring activities for children. The event concluded on a high note with a special collaboration featuring Lina, the official mascot of the Malaysia Pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka, alongside Malaysia’s beloved animated characters Upin & Ipin, as well as Koko, the official mascot of the Australia Pavilion.

The Ministry of Digital Week, held during the 18th week of Expo 2025 Osaka, received an overwhelming response, recording more than 100,000 visitors over the five (5) days at the Malaysia Pavilion. The Expo, which takes place every five (5) years and features the participation of 158 countries, continues to be a global highlight, attracting millions of visitors from around the world.

The Ministry of Digital also wishes to extend its appreciation to the Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI) for the opportunity to host the Ministry of Digital Week, as well as to all parties involved in making this inspiring week a resounding success.
