GOVERNMENT INNOVATION INITIATIVE (GII) TO ACCELERATE MALAYSIA’S JOURNEY OF BECOMING AN AI NATION BY 2030

KUALA LUMPUR, 14 FEBRUARY, 2026 - In a move to fundamentally transform digital governance, the Ministry of Digital is activating the Government Innovation Initiative (GII), a strategic national undertaking poised to galvanize innovation across the public sector and advancing Malaysia’s commitment to achieving AI Nation status by 2030.

GII is designed to move beyond conceptual innovation into measurable delivery. The initiative translates real government and citizen problem statements into deployable solutions, prioritising Made by Malaysia technologies, strengthening the domestic AI ecosystem, and enabling Malaysian producers of AI and digital products to scale nationally and globally.

In line with this, the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC), under the direction of the Ministry of Digital with close collaboration with the Ministry of Health, successfully delivered a flagship pilot of its GII project called the RadioConnect initiative with three public hospitals.

RadioConnect aims to systematically and efficiently provide cloud-based connectivity with secure access across multiple providers nationwide through each hospital’s Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS).

The objective of RadioConnect is to facilitate and streamline the entire process to provide secure, economical and instant electronic storage, retrieval, and sharing of diagnostic images like X-rays, MRIs, and CT scans by allowing authorised doctors and medical practitioners to access patient images from multiple departments across all hospitals in Malaysia, deeply enhancing diagnostic efficiency and patient care.

The next step for GII involves the setup of Citizen Labs as a collaborative platform for community and the public to submit their problem statements and experiences, and to channel these statements directly to the relevant Ministries, ensuring that the most appropriate solutions are developed to address the needs of the Rakyat.

Central to this mission is the MyInovasi portal (myinovasi.gov.my), Malaysia’s premier platform for fostering a dynamic innovation ecosystem. This pilot initiative, undertaken by the Digital Ministry and its agencies, serves as a bridge between the government, academia, and industry, designed specifically to match local innovations with real-world needs.

As part of this whole-of-government approach to innovation, the Ministry of Digital is strategically aligning key national innovation assets under a unified ecosystem. In support of the GII’s objectives, Futurise Sdn. Bhd. will now transition to operate under the MDEC, where it is set to take on the continued progression of GII projects through the framework of the National Regulatory Sandbox.

"The Government Innovation Initiative is not just about adopting new technology but about building a future-proof public sector that is responsive, efficient, and deeply rooted in local ingenuity,” said Minister of Digital Gobind Singh Deo.

“Through the Government Innovation Initiative, we are breaking down silos and unifying our national innovation assets under a single, cohesive ecosystem. With Citizen Labs, we are creating a direct pipeline where the Rakyat’s challenges meet Malaysian-made AI solutions, accelerating our transformation into a leading digital nation by 2030,” he added.
