PRESS RELEASE
MINISTRY OF DIGITAL ADVANCES PUBLIC SECTOR AI CAPABILITY THROUGH AWS AI ACADEMY
PUTRAJAYA, 12 FEBRUARY 2026 — The Ministry of Digital, through the National AI Office (NAIO), today collaborated with Amazon Web Services (AWS) on the AWS AI Academy, an initiative supporting Towards An Ai Nation 2030 agenda by strengthening digital capability across the public sector.
The AI for Productivity and Decision-Making in the Public Sector programme equips government officers with practical knowledge and capabilities to apply emerging technologies responsibly in their daily functions, strengthening policy development, enhancing productivity, and improving public service delivery.
Aligned with the National AI Action Plan 2026–2030, Malaysia is advancing toward an “AI-Augmented Government” that empowers civil servants through intelligent automation. By reducing routine and repetitive tasks, officers can concentrate on strategic priorities and citizen value creation.
Supporting this, the programme focuses on five key priorities:
•Strengthening policy capacity for more robust, data-driven decision-making.
•Deepening institutional understanding of emerging technologies and governance considerations.
•Enhancing applied digital capabilities to improve productivity and operational effectiveness.
•Promoting practical use cases relevant to government functions.
•Encouraging problem-solving approaches to improve service quality and efficiency
Speaking at the workshop, Mr. Ma. Sivanesan Marimuthu, Deputy Secretary-General (Digital Development), Ministry of Digital Malaysia, emphasised that AI adoption must be anchored in collaboration, governance, and accountability. He noted that cross-agency learning and consistent standards are critical to building a public sector that is confident, capable, and responsible in its use of AI.
The programme emphasised practical application through interactive sessions, including the Service Design Workshop, where public sector officers co-developed blueprints for technology-enabled citizen services, and the Policy Lab, where participants examined and stress-tested policy scenarios using comparative case studies.
These sessions provided a sandbox-style learning environment, enabling officers to explore agency-specific challenges, exchange perspectives, and strengthen a whole-of-government understanding of technology integration.
The initiative marks the first time that the AWS AI Academy introduced the AI for the public sector programme in the region, with Malaysia selected in recognition of its policy direction and growing readiness to advance responsible adoption of advanced digital technologies within government.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
The programme reinforces a whole-of-government approach by fostering cross-agency learning, strengthening shared understanding, and advancing more consistent governance practices across the public sector, in line with Malaysia’s people-centred innovation agenda guided by principles of trust, responsibility, and meaningful socio-economic outcomes.
