ADDRESSES BACKLOG OF FOREIGN KNOWLEDGE WORKER (FKW) & DE RANTAU NOMAD APPLICATIONS
PUTRAJAYA, 18 April 2026 - The Ministry of Digital refers to the press statement made on 29 March 2026 regarding concerns raised by industry stakeholders about the recent revisions to the Foreign Knowledge Worker (FKW) application guidelines and associated processing timelines.
The Ministry is pleased to announce that the previously reported backlog of over 3,600 applications has been processed on MDEC's part as of 15 April 2026 and has progressed to the next stage.
Several factors have been identified as causes for the backlog, including technological system constraints that require manual processing, limited manpower, and a sharp increase in the number of applications. This situation has also impacted the DE Rantau Nomad program and the Malaysia Tech Entrepreneur Programme (MTEP).
Following the resolution of the backlog, MDEC is now proceeding with the processing of the remaining applications. Several interim measures have been implemented, including the redeployment of staff, restructuring of workflows, hiring of temporary personnel, and the addition of appropriate resources to enhance efficiency and expedite processing actions.
MDEC aims for processing operations to return to full stability by the second quarter of 2026. To prevent recurring issues, MDEC has commenced the procurement of a new digital platform that will consolidate all three programs: FKW, De Rantau Nomad, and MTEP. This platform will integrate automation and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to reduce reliance on manual processes and enhance delivery efficiency. The implementation of the FKW application module is scheduled to begin in the third quarter of 2026, followed by De Rantau Nomad and MTEP at the end of the first quarter of 2027. These steps are being taken to ensure efficient service continuity and to meet the needs of a growing industry.
The Ministry remains committed to restoring industry confidence, enhancing service delivery efficiency, and strengthening Malaysia's position as a premier destination for global digital talent. In this regard, the Ministry expresses its appreciation to all stakeholders for their ongoing understanding and support.
Further information will be shared from time to time, in line with the implementation of improvements and continuous engagement with stakeholders.
