NAIO KICKS OFF INAUGURAL WORKING GROUP MEETING, DRIVING MALAYSIA’S AI LEADERSHIP
KUALA LUMPUR, 28 February 2025 – The National AI Office (NAIO) today convened the inaugural meeting of its Working Groups, a landmark event that signals Malaysia's unwavering commitment to becoming a leading AI nation. The meeting, held in Kuala Lumpur, brought together over 170 distinguished experts from diverse backgrounds, solidifying the nation’s collective drive to shape the future of artificial intelligence.
Driven by the agenda, “Building an AI Nation,” this initiative underscores NAIO’s strategic intent to create a dynamic and inclusive ecosystem where diverse perspectives and expertise converge. Following an overwhelming response to its call for participation in mid-February, NAIO successfully brought together a dynamic and diverse group, encompassing Malaysians, international experts, and members of the Malaysian diaspora. The assembly features industry veterans, consultants, researchers, and AI advocates, ensuring a holistic and multifaceted approach to AI development.
The NAIO Working Group initiative unites a broad spectrum of expertise across critical domains, including technology, policy, ethics, security, talent development, and societal impact. This collaborative platform champions inclusivity and expertise, ensuring that AI strategies are translated into tangible solutions that strengthen Malaysia's position in the global AI landscape.
Today, the seven Working Groups -- AI Sovereignty, AI Regulation & Policy, AI Security, AI Governance & Ethics, AI Safety, AI Talent, and AI Advisory -- set their strategic direction, defining clear objectives, deliverables, and milestones for each group.
These Working Groups will collaborate closely with sectoral teams to translate AI strategies into real-world applications that directly impact Malaysia’s economic growth and social well-being. Each group is designed to address specific challenges and opportunities within the national AI agenda, ensuring Malaysia remains competitive in the AIdriven era.
The insights and recommendations from the Working Groups will be instrumental in shaping national AI strategies, including the AI Action Plan, regulatory frameworks, and governance models. This initiative reaffirms NAIO’s commitment to inclusive and collaborative policymaking, leveraging expertise and innovation to advance Malaysia’s AI aspirations.
By harnessing the strength of this diverse and talented community, NAIO is poised to lead Malaysia towards AI excellence. NAIO remains committed to fostering strategic collaborations, ensuring AI serves as a transformative driver for national progress.
